A GUIDE TO THE BEST PHOTOGRAPHS TO CONVERT:

ANIMALS:

When taking photographs of animals try to get level with them. For instance, do not take a picture of a cat sitting on the shed roof from ground level or of your dog without crouching down so that the camera is at eye level with the animal. Try to avoid 'messy' backgrounds such as lots of toys or flowers as these will drawn your eyes away from the main subject which is of course your animal. Avoid odd angles. I.e. if the animal is half facing you their back will make a diagonal line when stitched which is not as good as a straight line. Try to make sure that there are no long dark shadows behind a dark animal as these will be impossible to distinguish from the animal itself.

SCENES:

Shadows are the biggest problem with scenes & buildings. If the sun is too strong, go back another day if possible. Try to take pictures of buildings from directly in front or you may not like the angle of the stitches if taken from the side. Don't worry about cars or lamp posts because we can always remove them if you want us to.

PEOPLE:

Don't worry about red eye with flash photography as we will be able to compensate for this if you tell us their correct eye colour. Try to make your subject wear plain clothes and avoid very colourful dresses for the ladies. Very bright coloured clothes or backgrounds detract from peoples faces. Try not to cram too many people into each photograph. A couple makes a lovely picture, but a large family group does not do justice to the medium you are wanting to use i.e. cross stitch. Children make ideal subjects, but try to avoid including teddies or other soft toys.

Please do not enlarge photographs for our purposes. A standard 6"x 4" enprint is fine. We can even work from passport photos if that is all you have!
We can also accept Digital photographs in JPEG format

Sizes are based on the stitch count so that you can work out the size you require on any type of fabric.

Landscape means - Wider than high Portrait means - taller than wide

THE FINAL WORD:

Remember, we can only chart what is on the photograph. If your dog is black but the photo has faded to brown or grey we will chart what we can see unless you tell us otherwise. If in doubt send one photo for position and another for colour stating exactly what you want. You can never give us too much information. And always leave a telephone number, preferably a day time one, so that if our artist gets into difficulties we can give you a ring and chat about the problem.

Don't be afraid to give it a try. The results are worth it!

PRICES

The price for converting a picture into a cross stitch design depends on two things:

  1. The size of the finished stitching
  2. To some extent, the subject.

The tables below shows three price columns.
Most designs will come from the first column which is original photographs, drawings or ideas.
If you require two or more photographs/images merging use column 2.
The third column is only for Badges, Coats of Arms or Sampler
